Sea Org

The Sea Org is the embodiment of L Ron Hubbard's navy fetish. It is Scientology's private navy and the upper management of the Church. This "navy" is made up of one ship, the Freewinds. All of the higher level OT training and auditing occurs on the Freewinds. It is currently dry docked and sealed due to it being made almost exclusively of Blue Asbestos. There are many things that are terribly wrong with the Sea Org, and here are just a few of them.

[edit] Billion-year contract

Members of the Sea Org sign an employment contract with the organization for one billion years. Sea Org members, in accordance with Scientology beliefs, are expected to return to the Sea Org when they are reborn. The motto of the Sea Org is, "Revenimus" or "We Come Back" in Latin. Official statements from the Church of Scientology contend the contract is merely symbolic of the dedication members are expected to hold to the organization, and that members are free to leave if they wish. It has, however, been alleged by former Sea Org personnel that members are restricted from leaving. Members who do leave are issued a "Freeloader's bill", retroactively billing them for any auditing or training they have received. These Scientologists may not receive any services at any Scientology organizations until they pay off this bill and perform an amends project.

[edit] Forced Abortions in the Sea Org

Marriage and family are discouraged in the Sea Org, as they are distractions from serving the Church. There are a number of statements from women formerly in the Sea Org who state that they were advised to get an abortion when they became pregnant so that they would not be sent to lower organizations.

[edit] Cancer-causing Blue Asbestos on the Freewinds

In April 2008, the Freewinds was shut down after cancer-causing blue asbestos was discovered during maintenance by the Curacao Drydock Company. Blue asbestos is the most dangerous form of asbestos, and the ship is reported to be "extensively contaminated". According to InsuranceNewsNet, "Decontamination, if it is even possible, is likely to cost tens of millions of dollars and would result in the ship being in dry dock for many months." The discovery confirmed a 2001 allegation by former Scientologist Lawrence Woodcraft, who had overseen the original renovation of the Freewinds in 1987. The Captain also admitted that during previous maintenance performed by his personnel, asbestos was released into the ventilation system but not reported.

Scientology continues to deny that there is an Asbestos problem. On May 15, 2008, a Scientology spokesperson told Metro, "There is not now and never has been a situation of asbestos exposure on the Freewinds." although this is notably false, and evidence of blue asbestos has been rife for over 21 years. Scientology continues to maintain falsely that no asbestos was found on the ship, which could potentially stop Scientologists from getting the medical help they require.

[edit] Freewinds pollution of Bonaire

The Freewinds has been noted in Bonaire for the amount of waste water it dumps into the island's inland waste pit. According to one 2007 report, the ship sometimes sends four loads of waste per hour, contributing to a growing environmental problem on the island.
